Permission is granted to temporarily download one copy of the materials (information or software) on this website for personal, non-commercial transitory viewing only. Japan Rail Pass Terms and Conditions

The following Terms and Conditions apply to the use of this Japan Rail Pass site as well as all transactions conducted through the site.

 

Consumer Agreement

Terms and Conditions related to the use and purchase of the Japan Rail Pass
VALID AREA

Valid for the railways, buses, and ferry boats shown below: 


RAILWAYS:
All Railways of the JR Group, Shinkansen super express train (except "NOZOMI"& "MIZUHO"), limited express trains, express trains, and rapid or local trains. (not usable on some trains)

BUSES:
Local lines of JR Bus (JR Bus; JR Hokkaido Bus, JR Bus Tohoku, JR Bus Kanto, JR Tokai Bus, West Japan JR Bus, Chugoku JR Bus, JR Shikoku Bus,JR Kyushu Bus.)  *The PASS is not valid for travel on express bus routes operated  by JR Bus.

JR Ferry:
Miyajima/Miyajimaguchi (not usable on Beetle II Hakata/Pusan)

Remarks:
The JAPAN RAIL PASS is not valid on the "NOZOMI" & "MIZUHO" Shinkansen trains. If you wish to use these trains, you must pay the ordinary fare and the limited express charge, and if it is in a Green car, then the additional Green car surcharge. An additional charge is required for a private compartment and a sleeping car.

PURCHASE AN EXCHANGE ORDER

The JAPAN RAIL PASS is sold outside Japan. Purchase an Exchange Order before leaving for Japan and exchange it for an actual PASS after arrival in Japan.

OBTAINING THE PASS

The Exchange Order can be converted to a PASS at JAPAN RAIL PASS exchange offices at the following stations: 
Kushiro, Obihiro, Asahikawa, Sapporo, Hakodate, Shin-Chitose Airport, Shin-HakodateHokuto, Aomori, Hachinohe, Morioka, Akita, Nagano, Mito, Sendai, Yamagata, Fukushima, Niigata, Kanazawa, Tokyo, Narita Airport (Terminal 1 and 2), Ueno, Shinjuku, Shibuya, Ikebukuro Yokohama, Shin-Yokohama, Odawara, Mishima, Shizuoka, Hamamatsu, Nagoya, Kyoto, Higashi-Maizuru, Shin-Osaka, Osaka, Kansai Airport, San-no-miya, Okayama, Tottori, Yonago, Sakai-Minato, Matsue, Hiroshima, Shin-Yamaguchi, Shimonoseki, Takamatsu, Matsuyama, Tokushima, Kokura, Hakata, Saga, Nagasaki, Kumamoto, Oita, Miyazaki, Kagoshima-Chuo.

The Exchange Order is valid for 3 months starting from the date of issuance, and it can be exchanged at any time within the 3 months period. The starting date of the PASS can be any day within one month from the date the PASS is issued. Once the PASS has a starting date written on it, the date cannot be changed.

ELIGIBILITY

The JAPAN RAIL PASS is a special ticket that is available only to travelers visiting Japan from foreign countries for sightseeing. To be eligible to purchase a JAPAN RAIL PASS you must meet the following condition. 

1.You are a foreign tourist visiting Japan from abroad for sightseeing, under the entry status of "temporary visitor".

* Only persons who have a passport bearing this "temporary visitor" stamp can use a JAPAN RAIL PASS.

*You must present both your passport and proof of eligibility to purchase an Exchange Order in a country other than Japan and to exchange your Exchange Order for a JAPAN RAIL PASS in Japan.*You cannot use a photocopy of your passport to purchase an Exchange Order or to exchange your Exchange Order for a JAPAN RAIL PASS.

SEAT RESERVATION

Seat reservations can be made without additional payment. To make a reservation, apply at any Travel Service Center or a Reservation Office (Midori-no-madoguchi) at a JR station. There, show your PASS, and obtain your reserved-seat ticket before boarding. A non-reserved seat can be used simply by showing your JAPAN RAIL PASS. Seat reservations cannot be made before you receive the PASS in Japan. 

The periods when seat reservations are particularly difficult to secure are as follow:
December 28 to January 6 (New Year holidays)
April 27 to May 6 (the Golden Week annual holidays)
August 11 to 20 (Obon, traditional homecoming holidays)

* Child is from age 6 to and including 11.
The age is based on the day when an Exchange Order is issued.

 

EXTRA CHARGE:

Additional charges are required if you are boarding a private compartment or sleeping berth. The PASS is not valid for "NOZOMI"& "MIZUHO" Shinkansen train, and a separate full fare ticket must be purchased.

REFUND

[Exchange Order] 
An Exchange Order that has not been turned in for a PASS can be refunded only at the same office that issued the Exchange Order within one year after the date of issue.
*A handling charge and a communication fee, set within the regulations of each issuing office, will be deducted at a  rate of 10%.

[JAPAN RAIL PASS]
After the Exchange Order is exchanged for a JAPAN RAIL PASS and before the PASS is used, the PASS can be refunded at any JAPAN RAIL PASS exchange office of the Japan Railways Groups.
* 10% of the yen price of the PASS will be charged as a handling fee.
* No refund can be made for any reason on or after the first day of use.
* Neither refunds nor extensions of the validity period can be made on a PASS in the event of train's non-operation, delay, or the like.

*The cost of shipping will not be refunded. In addition, shipping fee for any Exchange Orders required to be shipped back to NTA America will be the responsibility of the customer.

LOST/STOLEN

Neither an Exchange Order nor a PASS can be reissued if lost or stolen.

OTHER USAGE CONDITIONS:

1. A JAPAN RAIL PASS is strictly limited to the assigned individuals; it is not transferable from one person to another. 
2. You should carry your passport during travel, and be prepared to show it upon request.
3. These and other usage conditions follow the Japan Railways Group passenger transportation regulations and Japanese laws.

 

Tour Packages Terms and Conditions

Please Read Carefully

Purchase of any travel services offered by NTAA constitutes a contractual arrangement between you and NTAA, and represents your acceptance of this “Terms & Conditions” set out herein. Please ensure that you read carefully and understand these Terms & Conditions prior to booking. If the person making the Reservation is doing so on behalf of a party then that person must have the authority to accept these Terms and Conditions on behalf of the entire party and is responsible for ensuring that each member of the party is kept fully informed of all the details of the Reservation.

Tour Packages

The tour packages on this website are not only operated by NTAA. In some cases, they are operated by our contracted company(s), in other cases by Nippon Travel Agency which is our parent company in Japan. The terms and Conditions specified here also apply accordingly. If any dispute arises with this agreement, we will assume that you will attempt to resolve any issues according to the laws of the United States. In addition, the photos which are published on this website are images relevant to the area. It does not always guarantee that you will see the same scenery. The itinerary (tour completion time, places visited, schedules and others) may be changed due to weather, traffic condition, or other operational reasons.

1. Reservation

Please contact us your travel agent or submit your reservation application form through our website. Some tour participants are required to complete, sign and return the tour application & tour member’s agreement form.

2. Price

All transactions are conducted in U.S. Dollars including tax. 
Prices are subject to change without prior notice and may vary depending on availability.

3. Payment

All services/tours/activities/tickets must be prepaid at the time of booking by Cash / Credit card / Check/ Bank transfer. All prices will be processed in U.S. dollars, and are subject to additional currency conversions by banks or credit card companies, which are not within NTAA’s control. Please note in regards to refunds, any difference that may arise from the fluctuation in the exchange rate will not be NTAA’s responsibly. NTAA will not assume any foreign exchange risk. Reservations for tours may be canceled if a full payment is not received within the required deadline.

4. Tour Cancellation / Change

When you cancel your reservation, basically the following fee will be assessed per person accordingly.

*Cancellation/Change policies may vary depending on the tour type of reservation you've made. Please check our cancellation and policy change of each tour carefully. If you need to cancel or change your reservation, please contact our office directly at which you made your original booking.

5. Revision and Contents of Service

NTAA may at any time cancel or revise the tour services for any of the following reasons: natural disaster, weather conditions, suspension of services rendered by transport, accommodation, or service provider facilities, provision of transportation not based on the original operational plan, governmental orders, or other circumstances beyond NTAA's control. NTAA reserves the right to take necessary measures when safe, smooth tour operation, or when there is a valid reason to believe that the tour cannot continue. In such cases, NTAA must explain in a timely manner its inability to function according to the itinerary under the circumstances.

6. Travel Insurance

NTAA strongly suggests tour participants to purchase travel insurance to cover unforeseen circumstances during your tours or cancellations. Travel Insurance will cover your non-refundable trip costs in the event that you must cancel your trip due to illness, family crisis or other emergencies.

7. Disclaimer

Customers, acknowledge by their acceptance, that NTAA, its agents, and suppliers, in making arrangements for food, beverage, accommodations, tours, transportation or any service in connection with the itineraries of an individual tour, shall not be liable for injury, damage, loss, accident, delay or irregularity, liability or expense to person or property due to act of default by any hotel, carrier or other company or person providing services included in the tours. NTAA, its affiliates, tour operators and agents assume no responsibility for any sickness, theft, labor disputes, breakdowns, road closures, requests of Park or government agencies, acts of war and terrorism, weather conditions, defects in any vehicle of transportation or for any misadventure or any other causes beyond their control. NTAA reserves the right to cancel, change or substitute any service and to decline to accept or continue to accommodate any tour members at any time for any reason including, without limitation, an insufficient number of participants. Tour Carriers and operators shall not be liable for any inconvenience, loss or damage, injury, accident, delay or irregularity which may be the result of a defect or through the acts or omissions of any person or company performing or rendering the services. These firms are not responsible for any changes or increased costs incurred by passengers as a result of the cancellation of services due to be provided by its agents or suppliers for any reason including, without limitation, an insufficient number of participants. Suppliers are independent contractors who are not agents of NTAA. Products are provided subject to the terms of applicable tariffs, rules, and regulations. Supplier and NTAA assume no responsibility for delays caused by accidents, breakdown, weather, conditions of trails, roads, airspace and any other conditions beyond the control of Supplier, in addition to insufficient numbers of passengers. All travel documents are issued subject to these terms and conditions by NTAA, its agents, and suppliers.

 

Legal Notice
All notice from NTAA to You may be posted on our Website and will be deemed delivered within thirty (30) days after posting. Notices from You to NTAA shall be made either by e-mail, sent to the address we provide on our Website, or first class mail to our address at:
